Andrew teaches a series of three weekend teachings on the three death bardos in the Tibetan Buddhist Tradition: the bardo of letting go, the luminous bardo of dharmata,
and the karmic bardo of becoming.

The content offered in this bardo weekend program is the third in the series and it presents an in depth look at the Karmic Bardo of Becoming.

If we have prepared, death can be the crowning moment of life, a true once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for enlightenment. The notion is that the karma that carried us into this life is exhausted, and the karma that takes us into our next life has not yet formed. This gap, or “bardo” provides an amazing opportunity for very rapid spiritual progress.

Tibetan Buddhism contends that there are more opportunities for enlightenment in the states after death than there are during life. This weekend program on the second after death bardo will show you how to take full advantage of this precious time.

Bardo Weekend Program: The Bardo of Becoming is the Cosmic Dressing Room

Most of us will spend an average of forty-nine days after death in the karmic bardo of becoming.  This is where the naked awareness that we came to in the bardo of dying, and then was revealed in the bardo of dharmata, is now clothed again with habitual patterns– heading for rebirth into another lifetime in the endless recycling of confused existence.

This second bardo state is an extremely volatile time, where the winds of karma arise to blow us involuntarily into our next birth.  If we prepare properly, it will transform into the bardo of opportunity, where we can literally become whatever we want by directing these winds in the proper direction.  It’s as if the molten iron (that melted during the bardo of dying) is about to cool back down and take solid form.  If we can use our volition to pour our formless awareness into the proper form, we will be reborn into a good life.  If we are not able to, karma takes over and freezes us into an often less than optimal form.

Without preparation this second bardo turns into the bardo of panic, where a single thought can take on a life of its own and propel us uncontrollably into an entire realm of existence.  In this bardo mind becomes reality. “This is a very dangerous time”, says the Dalai Lama.”  But it is also an extremely opportune time – if we are prepared.

By studying the karmic bardo of becoming we will know what to expect after we die, when to expect it, and then what to do about it. The bardo of becoming teaches us what reincarnates, and why.  It also teaches us how to help those who have died, for this is the bardo where we can most effectively help those that have passed.

Studying the bardos is also more than just learning about death, they are indeed a condensation of the entire spiritual path.  Learning about the bardos not only helps us have a good death, but we also learn how to lead a good life.
