THE POWER OF DARKNESS

Dark Retreat

“Every man is two men; one is awake in the darkness, the other asleep in the light.”
— Khalil Gibran

An Ancient Practice Reborn

What is Dark Retreat?

Dark retreat is the practice of spending extended time in complete darkness — no light, no screens, no visual stimulation of any kind. It is a voluntary withdrawal from the world of appearances that allows you to encounter dimensions of your being that are invisible in broad daylight.

Though it is rapidly emerging as one of the most radical wellness and spiritual practices of our time, dark retreat has ancient roots. Forms of dark practice have existed for millennia across Tibetan Buddhist, Hindu, Taoist, and indigenous traditions. At its core, it is extraordinarily simple: turn off the lights — and leave them off — and discover what happens when there is absolutely nothing left to seduce your attention outward.

Andrew Holecek has been practicing dark retreat for nearly thirty years and is one of the world’s most experienced teachers of this tradition. His work bridges the ancient Tibetan Buddhist practices with contemporary neuroscience, psychology, and the emerging science of consciousness.

Chapter One

The Two Faces of Darkness

Dark retreat is the perfect “Rorschach meditation.” The Rorschach test is a psychological assessment that analyzes the way a person projects onto the image of a neutral inkblot. Darkness is the ultimate neutral inkblot. Whatever you project onto the dark says more about you than it does about the darkness. If the thought of going into the dark makes your knees tremble, that trembling is about you — not the dark.

The Roman god Janus presided over gates, doorways, and thresholds — the god of beginnings, endings, and transitions. He had two faces looking in opposite directions, because every threshold faces two ways. Darkness is like this. It has two faces, and understanding both is essential before stepping into the dark.

Diabolical Darkness

The first face is what we might call diabolical darkness — darkness associated with evil, ignorance, and all things “dark” in the negative sense. We talk about the darkness of death, the darkness of ignorance, the dark ages. People dress in black when they mourn. The dark side of the Force needs no introduction. This is the darkness that most people project onto the practice, which is why they recoil from it.

Divine Darkness

The second face is divine darkness — the sacred darkness from which all things emerge. This is the darkness of the womb, the darkness of fertile soil, the darkness before dawn. The Christian mystic Meister Eckhart wrote that God resides in a darkness beyond all light. In this tradition, the deepest truth is not found in illumination but in what lies beyond illumination — in the luminous darkness at the ground of being.

Tucked within the darkness is the most dazzling light of wisdom. Those who are willing to pay the price and go against the current will discover that darkness is not the enemy — it is the portal.

As Janus leads us across the threshold, we transition from diabolical darkness into divine darkness. We end our old relationship to the dark and begin an entirely new one — one that can transform every dimension of our lives.

Navigating the dark

Installing the GPS

At first glance, dark retreat may seem wildly esoteric, beyond the reach of the common person. Andrew’s work is devoted to making it accessible, demystifying dark practice, and revealing its extraordinary relevance to everyday life.

The spirit of dark retreat is akin to what happens when you step outside of a brightly lit room into a dark space. At first you cannot see a thing. Your pupils are so contracted by external light that your internal vision is shut down. But if you stay in the dark and allow your eyes to adjust, you begin to see more and more. The same thing happens with the eye of your mind.

The more time you spend in the dark, the more open and sensitive you get, the more you dilate your consciousness, and the more you see. Dark retreat is an observatory that explores inner space instead of outer space, a personal Hubble telescope aimed into the cosmos of your own mind.

To Erase

The power of dark retreat comes from its ability to erase. This practice is about subtraction, not addition. When brought to fruition, dark retreat erases everything that is false about you — every pretense, posture, and mask. It removes distractions, habits, and the superficial layers of identity that accumulate in the light of day. What remains when everything false has been erased is what is true.

To Align

Erasing leads to aligning. One way to understand our current crises — personal and collective — is in terms of misalignment. We are seriously out of sync. Misalignment generates suffering at every level: physical disease as misalignment of the body, psychological distress as misalignment of the mind, social discord as misalignment of communities. Dark retreat delivers you to the reduction base and allows you to realign from the ground up.

A Lunar Spirituality

You and I are children of darkness. Literally and allegorically. Every morning, we arise from darkness and every night we return to it. Every flash of insight, every flicker of thought, arises from the blackness of the unconscious mind and returns there when it fades. Andrew’s is a lunar spirituality — a path that worships the night and is healed by it. Dark retreat is a return to source, a recovery of the night, and a restoration of true sight.
