THE POWER OF DARKNESS
Dark Retreat

An Ancient Practice Reborn
What is Dark Retreat?
Though it is rapidly emerging as one of the most radical wellness and spiritual practices of our time, dark retreat has ancient roots. Forms of dark practice have existed for millennia across Tibetan Buddhist, Hindu, Taoist, and indigenous traditions. At its core, it is extraordinarily simple: turn off the lights — and leave them off — and discover what happens when there is absolutely nothing left to seduce your attention outward.
Andrew Holecek has been practicing dark retreat for nearly thirty years and is one of the world’s most experienced teachers of this tradition. His work bridges the ancient Tibetan Buddhist practices with contemporary neuroscience, psychology, and the emerging science of consciousness.
Chapter One
The Two Faces of Darkness
Dark retreat is the perfect “Rorschach meditation.” The Rorschach test is a psychological assessment that analyzes the way a person projects onto the image of a neutral inkblot. Darkness is the ultimate neutral inkblot. Whatever you project onto the dark says more about you than it does about the darkness. If the thought of going into the dark makes your knees tremble, that trembling is about you — not the dark.
The Roman god Janus presided over gates, doorways, and thresholds — the god of beginnings, endings, and transitions. He had two faces looking in opposite directions, because every threshold faces two ways. Darkness is like this. It has two faces, and understanding both is essential before stepping into the dark.
Diabolical Darkness
The first face is what we might call diabolical darkness — darkness associated with evil, ignorance, and all things “dark” in the negative sense. We talk about the darkness of death, the darkness of ignorance, the dark ages. People dress in black when they mourn. The dark side of the Force needs no introduction. This is the darkness that most people project onto the practice, which is why they recoil from it.
Divine Darkness
The second face is divine darkness — the sacred darkness from which all things emerge. This is the darkness of the womb, the darkness of fertile soil, the darkness before dawn. The Christian mystic Meister Eckhart wrote that God resides in a darkness beyond all light. In this tradition, the deepest truth is not found in illumination but in what lies beyond illumination — in the luminous darkness at the ground of being.
Tucked within the darkness is the most dazzling light of wisdom. Those who are willing to pay the price and go against the current will discover that darkness is not the enemy — it is the portal.
As Janus leads us across the threshold, we transition from diabolical darkness into divine darkness. We end our old relationship to the dark and begin an entirely new one — one that can transform every dimension of our lives.
Benefits
Why Do Dark Retreat?
There are almost as many reasons for going into the dark as there are people doing dark retreat. Here are the most common doorways people walk through.
Deep Rest & Sleep Recovery
Most people spend the first few days catching up on lost sleep. Dark retreat allows you to “democratize consciousness” — overthrowing the imperialism of wake-centricity and empowering the usually oppressed states of dreaming and deep sleep.
Unleashed Creativity
Thomas Edison and Salvador Dali both devised methods to access the hypnagogic state between waking and sleeping — the zone where creative genius lives. Dark retreat extends this threshold state for hours or days at a time, producing volcanic eruptions of creative force.
Problem Solving & Clarity
Set a heartfelt intention before or during retreat and let the darkness process it. Answers arrive as dreams, visions, or sudden insights. Dark retreat extends the night — and allows for more answers from dimensions of mind inaccessible in daylight.
Shadow Integration
Everything we repress, deny, or refuse to face in life returns in the dark with nowhere to hide. Dark retreat is the ultimate shadow work — a compassionate confrontation with everything you have been avoiding, leading to profound psychological healing.
Accelerated Meditation
Dark retreat is like a meditation accelerator. When there is nothing to distract your attention outward, awareness naturally turns inward with extraordinary depth. Practitioners often report breakthroughs in a few days that would take months or years of conventional practice.
Sober Psychedelic
As the external world disappears, the internal world comes alive. Vivid imagery, lucid dreams, and profound states of consciousness emerge naturally as your mind’s inner light — normally drowned out by external stimulation — becomes visible.
Working With the Dark
The Three Zones
Andrew teaches that dark retreat operates within three concentric zones. Understanding these helps you find the balance between comfort and risk — the meditative dictum of “not too tight, not too loose.”
Comfort Zone
Your bubble bath, your happy place. There is nothing wrong with soaking in comfort, but if you never leave this zone, you never grow. In dark retreat, the comfort zone is where you settle in and establish your foundation.
Challenge Zone
Where evolution happens. You step out of comfort and test yourself. It may not always feel good, but stretching is good for growth. The more time you spend here, the bigger your comfort zone gets. This is where the magic of dark retreat lives.
Danger Zone
When you have gone too far. A healthy stretch transforms into a hurtful snap. In dark retreat this means grinding it out when you should stop, or going in without proper preparation. This book is just as much about keeping people out as inviting them in.
Navigating the dark
Installing the GPS
The spirit of dark retreat is akin to what happens when you step outside of a brightly lit room into a dark space. At first you cannot see a thing. Your pupils are so contracted by external light that your internal vision is shut down. But if you stay in the dark and allow your eyes to adjust, you begin to see more and more. The same thing happens with the eye of your mind.
The more time you spend in the dark, the more open and sensitive you get, the more you dilate your consciousness, and the more you see. Dark retreat is an observatory that explores inner space instead of outer space, a personal Hubble telescope aimed into the cosmos of your own mind.
